RAD's ACE-3402 aggregation site gateway is a carrier-class multi-service aggregator, specifically designed to optimise cellular backhaul by multiplexing various ATM or TDM services into a single IMA, STM-1/OC-3 or Gigabit Ethernet network interface. Typically located at hub sites or BSC/RNC sites, the ACE-3402 ensures the most economical allocation of backhaul resources in delivering 2G, 3G and next-generation services over ATM and SDH/SONET transport networks. Moreover, the ACE-3402 aggregation site gateway incorporates advanced pseudowire emulation capabilities, supporting operators in their migration to cost-effective packet transport by enabling the use of wholesale DSL services and Ethernet, IP or MPLS backbones for the provisioning of delay-tolerant, as well as real-time services.

ACE-3402 aggregation site gateway allows operators to capitalize on their legacy TDM or ATM installed base, by providing a single access platform for streamlining large volumes of cellular traffic and delivering multi-generation services. Part of RAD’s RAN backhaul solutions, this aggregation site gateway works opposite RAD’s ACE-3100 and ACE-3200 cell site gateways as well as the LA-130 DSL cell site gateway. Together, they enable mobile operators who own their transport links, as well as providers who lease lines from a local carrier, to meet the surging bandwidth requirements associated with an exponentially growing user base and the extensive deployment of new cellular services, such as 3G mobile broadband and rich-media communications.

Reduce cellular backhaul expenses through aggregation and overbooking

Featuring “Any-Service-Any-Port” functionality, the ACE-3402 works opposite RAD’s cell site gateways to maximize transport cost-efficiency, by allowing traffic aggregation while using various service interfaces. Typical applications for RAD’s aggregation site gateways include grooming ATM traffic and aggregating VC-12/VT1.5 circuits into a single IMA, channelized STM-1/OC-3 or Gigabit Ethernet uplinks.

The service-oriented functionality offered by the ACE-3402 minimizes the number of overall network links and facilitates the use of lower-priced, higher bit-rate STM-1/OC-3 ports in network edge switches, instead of costly E1/T1 links or deployment of additional switches. Mobile operators can therefore conserve existing resources, trim down the number of leased services required to support their networks, or utilize the excess capacity for a gradual introduction of new, bandwidth intensive services, consequently reducing backhaul capital expenditures (CapEx).

Furthermore, by supporting inherent ATM QoS attributes, the ACE-3402 aggregation site gateway enables service differentiation and traffic engineering, including prioritization, shaping and scheduling. Together with ATM’s statistical multiplexing nature, this allows operators to optimize network utilization by implementing overbooking strategies, thereby reducing service costs and operating expenditures (OpEx).

Emulated TDM/ATM services over PSN

RAD’s ACE-3402 aggregation site gateway offers operators great flexibility in carrying out a step-by-step transition to PSNs, leveraging packet transport’s cost-efficiency and scalability. It allows separation of real-time voice/video and delay-tolerant HSDPA traffic, by using a hybrid of PSN and deterministic TDM or ATM transport networks. Alternatively, operators can converge multi-generation traffic over an all-IP RAN, using pseudowire technology with accurate synchronization and clock distribution mechanisms, as well as with various encapsulation and QoS schemes for delivering ATM and TDM traffic over L2 and L3 networks.

Accurate synchronization over packet networks

The ACE-3402 is designed to provide highly accurate synchronization over packet transport and meet the key requirements for cellular backhaul, such as +/-16 ppb (parts per billion) frequency accuracy, with enhanced synchronization features. In addition, it enables packet timing distribution, using ACR ordinary clock master, as well as physical clock distribution via the TDM and Ethernet links.

SNMP management

The ACE-3402 features flexible management capabilities, including local management via an ASCII terminal (RS-232). In addition, remote management can be performed either inband or out-of-band, using the network or user ports, or the dedicated management port. Advanced FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security) and diagnostic tools are provided by RADview-EMS, RAD’s carrier-class element management system, via an SNMP-based GUI.

The ACE-3402 also supports a variety of configuration access channels, including CLI over Telnet, SNMP, Web server, and TFTP. Incorporated security features include Secure Shell (SSH), Web-based Secure Socket Layer (SSL), SNMPv3, and RADIUS, as well as management access control list (ACL).

The ACE-3402 fits into 19-inch racks and enables easy installation in limited spaces.
