ADSL Extender - Broadband Line Extender

Targeted applications:

  • ADSL line extender on rural / low density areas for customers who are out of the reach of existing DSLAM infrastructure ( > 4 km from the DSLAM).
  • Substitution of old multiplexers to provide ADSL Services / Broadband Internet Access for those subscribers who are serviced by old analog multiplexer systems.

Description of the system:

As it can be seen on the following 'graphical plan' the ADSL Extender platform consists of a rack-type Central Unit card (CU) located at the telephone exchange and a Remote Unit (RU) installed at or near the subscribers' premises. The Remote Unit is remotely powered from the Central Office on the same copper pair.

The ADSL Extender-CU connects 4 / 8 POTS lines from the POTS Exchange and 4 / 8 ADSL physical lines from the DSLAM. It collects and transmits their traffic over one or two SDLS.bis transmission lines (copper cable) to the
ADSL Extender-RU.

The transmission distance between the ADSL Extender CU and the RU -marked by 'x' on the scheme -can be doubled by a remote power fed Repeater. The ADSL Extender-RU receives the transmission. It splits and broadcasts it towards the 4 or 8 individual subscribers as integrated POTS & ADSL Service. The subscribers' ADSL NT should be located within 2km from the ADSL Extender-RU.

Operating Distance

The operating distance between the ADSL Extender-CU and the ADSL Extender-RU is determined by the SDSL transmission rate, the SDSL line coding and by the quality of the access network. The maximum transmission distance of the system (indicated by ‘X' on the system scheme) is shown by the following table:

The above figures apply for 0.4 mm diameter cable and noiseless environment. In the field the transmission distances can be shorter depending upon various disturbing factors (cable noise, crosstalk, etc.) and remote power feeding.

Adaptive Remote Power Feeding

The ADSL Extender-RU and the Repeater are remotely powered from the Central Office through the same copper cable. It makes installation easier, since there is no need for local powering at the remote location. The ADSL Extender-CU supplies 160 -320 Vdc according to the current power needs of the ADSL Extender-RU (depending on actual traffic). The outcome is lower power consumption, higher safety.

Network Management System

The comprehensive Network Management System of the ADSL Extender product family offers a full range of operations for the extended POTS & ADSL network: local or remote maintenance and management services, event logging, etc.

Transmission Speed

The maximum reliable transmission speed of the system is above 5Mbps per physical copper line. This total bandwidth can be divided among the individual subscribers.
